Revolutionizing Agricultural Retail Services with AI-Powered Insights

At the July TechHub Live event, Jason Minton, Taranis’ Chief Commercial Officer, shared a glimpse of what the ag retail industry has to look forward to, calling the evolution “Ag Retail 2.0”. Precision and efficiency have never been more important in production agriculture than they are today. Knowing what is happening on every acre in near real time puts Taranis’ retail partners in the driver’s seat to provide the insights and management opportunities that matter, faster than ever before.

This is the Taranis promise and a mission the company has been executing since 2020. The time has come to take insights to the next level: Ag Assistant, powered by generative AI is here.

“By the end of the 2024 growing season, retailers will be able to make a season-long recommendation with the click of a button. Ag Assistant will generate a recommendation for a field that will include imagery from Taranis, recommendations and context from both the agronomist’s comments and notes and the third-party information from vetted academic and industry recognized sources,” Minton told attendees.

A New Era in Ag Retail

Ag Assistant leverages a generative AI model trained on a wealth of proprietary agronomic data, spanning several years of in-season crop intelligence gathered from fields across the continental U.S. This model integrates data from various modalities, including images, text, and audio, and combines it with a profound understanding of agronomy— the result positions ag retailers to provide a level of timeliness and service never before possible.

“How long would it take you to scout 720 acres using traditional scouting?” Minton asked the audience, noting that the average farm size in the U.S. is around 700 acres. “Would you be able to look at every acre? Probably not. You’re likely looking at a portion of the field, getting a glimpse of what’s going on. At Taranis today, we’re looking at every acre on an enrolled farm. We can look at what issues are present and then zoom out to see how widespread they are. Weed pressures, nutrient deficiencies – we see it and provide the information you, as a retailer, need to have management conversations with your growers.”

Leveraging Ag Assistant, Minton says those management conversations will never look the same. The tool is poised to shift every conversation from reactive to proactive and predictive management. And the integration of generative AI into these services means that agronomists can now rely on data-driven insights rather than manual scouting and subjective judgment.

“Ag Assistant enhances the service retail organizations provide to their growers. Having an instantaneous understanding of the issues and the optimal solution creates efficiencies and opportunities. Ag Assistant allows agronomists to generate detailed, expert-level agronomy reports immediately – it pulls in seed hybrid information, herbicide resistance, weather history – all of the factors. The result is a report that puts precision and timeliness in the hands of the retailer. We never replace the agronomist, we just equip them with a tool that escalates the level of service they can provide,” he said.

The Goldilocks of precision agriculture, Ag Assistant ensures that no acre or issue goes un-scouted while creating management action plans that target the issues. The “just right” plans save growers money and future problems – a formula that strengthens the relationship between retailers and their grower customers.
